Trump Signs Third Executive Order Granting TikTok 90-Day Extension

President Donald Trump, today signed a third executive order granting TikTok a 90-day extension to complete its U.S. divestment from Chinese parent company ByteDance, pushing the deadline to September 17.

The order was disclosed on Trump’s Truth Social account Thursday morning.

As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark. This extension will last 90 days, which the administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.

said Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary.

Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days (September 17, 2025)

It is the third time Trump has extended the deadline. The first came on January 20, his first day back in office, after the platform briefly went dark when a national ban, approved by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court, took effect. A second extension followed in April, after U.S. officials appeared close to a deal to spin off TikTok into a domestically owned company. That effort collapsed when China withdrew support following Trump’s announcement of new tariffs.

Trump’s latest move signals a renewed push to force a U.S. based ownership structure for the app, long scrutinized for potential national security risks tied to its Chinese ownership. While the Biden administration largely backed off enforcement during its term. Now, Trump has placed TikTok back at the center of his tech agenda.

What’s Next

If a deal is not finalized by September 17, TikTok could once again face a potential ban or other enforcement measures under Trump’s executive powers. But given the lack of legal resistance and the platform’s continued operations, many analysts now view an actual shutdown as increasingly unlikely.

The clock is ticking… but the chime may never come.
